The Rise of the Autonomous Car

A few decades ago, there were several creative speculations on what the car of the future was going to look like. Although it may not be the flying Jetsons’ car we had all imagined, rest assured that the models, currently being manufactured, will not disappoint.

An autonomous vehicle may sound a bit impossible; however, this is one of the most cutting-edge advancements in the lifetime of the automotive industry! Imagine a car that doesn’t require an actual person to navigate to find its way, but rather a system that takes  you, smoothly and efficiently, to your destination. How amazing is that?! In this article we will answer some of the questions everyone is asking: How does this car work? Where did the idea first come from? Read on for more information about the rise of the autonomous car.

How Does The Autonomous Car Work?

The key technology behind the autonomous-driving vehicle is its advanced GPS unit. The self-driving car is able to navigate and, intuitively, sense its surroundings without human instruction. In order for these features to work, the car comes equipped not only with the HQ GPS unit, but also with an inertial system of navigation, and a range of sensors. The vehicle then utilizes the information from the GPS and localizes itself using the navigation system, refining its position using the data from the sensors in order to build a three dimensional image of its environment. Wow, that was a mouthful!

Don’t worry, the best part about the autonomous car is that you don’t have to understand it to reap all of the benefits of owning one.

The majority of control systems in self-driving cars have what we call a deliberative architecture, meaning they are capable of making decisions by maintaining an internal map of their world, and using that map to find a path to their destination while avoiding obstacles from a system of paths. The same process is repeated multiple times until the autonomous car reaches its destination.

The Rise of Autonomous Cars
In 2018, we may be more shocked than we should be by this discovery, being that we’ve all witnessed the booming technological advancements happening across all industries over the past few years. Although it’s exciting to think about self-driving cars hitting the streets in a few months in its beta stages, this invention still needs a lot of testing and further development before it can be considered a norm in the US. Rest assured, although still under construction, there is no turning back from here, autonomous vehicles are here to stay. Automotive companies have invested more than $80 billion dollars in this technology, and it is now starting to pay off.

More and more companies are gaining confidence and building excitement around showcasing their self-driving cars. Some models feature minimal human control or interaction. Mercedes showcased what a ride-hailing service of the future could look like during the CES 2018.

Electric cars with autonomous features are also featured as one of the cars for the future. There is even one that looks similar to the Jetson’s family car, with a glass bubble covering the long hood. As we hurdle into the future, keep an eye out for new and improved models making their debut on the automotive runway.
